Waiting for
Blazes by Roger Cummiskey 20 x 16 inches copyright 1999 Roger Cummiskey, All Rights Reserved This painting is from my exhibition "A Stroll thro' Ulysses". The character Molly Bloom, in James Joyce's book, is depicted here in my interpretation of what she was up to. Blazes Boylan was getting up a musical in which Molly Bloom was to have the lead role. Leopold was aware that there was more to the relationship than simply the musical but he avoided discussing it with some of the smart alleky Dubliners whom he met during the day. One chap openly asked him "Who's getting it up?" to which Bloom did not reply. |
Molly's Entrance by Roger Cummiskey 14 x 10 inches copyright 1999 Roger Cummiskey, All Rights Reserved The title for this original watercolour painting is taken from the door of the house where Leopold and Molly Bloom mythically lived together as husband and wife in Ulysses. The address was number seven Eccles Street in Dublin. The title refers to Molly having an affair with Blazes Boylan while Leopold was out about his business. In later years when the actual tenement was being demolished the door and surrounds were rescued by John Ryan, a publican, and erected in his public house, The Bailey, in Dublin, where it was a huge attraction until this pub closed its doors. The door was then rescued again. This time by Senator David Norris and his pals; and to this day the door and its surrounds live happily ever after at the James Joyce Centre in North Great George's Street, Dublin. Well worth a visit! |
