A Master Speaks

by Shaolin Shi Han Lei,
transcribed from oral to printed medium by D.L. Keur

This will be a collection of the actual speakings of various Shaolin masters with whom we are honored to associate and from whom we continue to learn. (I have taken the liberty to translate to the best of my ability some of the words that are used - Chinese word-ideas used when the speaker cannot find an English substitute in his or her vocabulary. )

"[The] Secrets of Shaolin move[ment] [are] learned [doing] slowly everything you [would do] very fast. [For] every practice you [do], you [do] one hundred slow and fifty [at] middle speed. [This is] better than [when] I learn[ed], [for] I [had to do] each a thousand times slow before [going] faster once, [then again] a thousand slow [to] one time fast. [But] students [are] many more impatient [now].

"Practice [should] always [be] slow [with] all, very [attention] [to] detail [and] precise. [This is] very important. Exquisite movement always.

"Movement [should] always [be] smooth like water flowing [from] pond [to] pond.

"Hands, feet, elbow...all striking parts [are faucets that] release chi at impact moment. [This] release releases [as a] flash ...all chi risen [through or of] movement released [at once] but [without effort of] will [and] without muscle.

"[This is the] secrets [of] centuries [and wherein the] magic happens. Repeat for life, all life, [and] soon comes the magic [sneaking in]. The magic come[s] after a thousand thousand practices. [It sneaks] in [and then] you have [it], but no have noticed [its] coming [until] happening when you not expect but happening need is. [Last phrase, my translation = ...but you have not noticed the magic's coming until some unexpected event triggers the need for it to come out in you.]

"[It is] always [a] surprise - [a] joyful surprise.

"[From] time magic comes, [for then] you [are the] gate [and able to] learn from magic, from chi [itself], from Tao."
