I finally got some of my harmonics down! however, as far as pinch harmonics goes, when i choke up and all i can get it...but how do people switch from normal picking to choking up and playing art. harmonics back to normal picking (like zack wylde or however you spell it...just a whole lotta practice i assume? -zbalz IP: Logged |

Everything is practice. As far as pick squeals go, I tend to choke up on the pick anyway, so all I have to do is roll my thumb slightly down the end of the pick and extend my wrist a little bit to hit a harmonic. Once I relax, I'm right back in normal picking mode. Some people get them by digging into the string harder and deeper wih the pick so that the string strikes the thumb as it rebounds. I've always found this method to be a good way to break a lot of strings though. IP: Logged |

Heres a small tip that kinda helped me to get the pinch harmonics down. Of course choke up on the pick just a little bit, but as you pick the note extend the wrist a little bit so that you picking at more of an angle down towards the bridge. This helped me achive the pinched harmonic sound. everybodys different but maybe that could help ya.IP: Logged |

Another idea...I hit the pinch harmonics much more easily on the upstroke with my index finger. My index finger comes off the side of the pick a little, so when I want a pinch harmonic I just twist my hand a little so my index is pointing more directly at the strings. Is this similar to what you were talking about fingerpickin.?IP: Logged |

I first discovered this technique for myself by accident. I was playing a Black Sabbath rhythm with all down-srokes on the low E-string. If I really got into it, the sound changed. There was this sort of chirping bite to the chords.... not harmonics, proper, but just a little bit of the same sound right before the chunk of the power chord.I didn't know how I was doing it at first, but i liked it. As i analyzed what I was doing, I discovered that when I really got into playing those chords, I was hitting the string with the fingernail on my index finger as well as the pick. I had a sudden flash of insight and remembered an interview I had read where a guitar player was talking about getting the strings to "scream" by catching the string with his index finger as he was picking. it suddenly made sense, and I could just do it after that. Nowadays, the way I hold my pick, Ive got a little bit of thumb sticking out on both sides of the point. I can get harmonics on both the up-stroke and the down-stroke at-will. IP: Logged |

The way I do pinch harmonics is hold the pick between the middle finger and the thumb. Then I pinch the string with the pick and the tip of the index finger at the very same time. I have no problem switching the pick back and forth(between middle and index) between strums. I also know about the other type of harmonic you are talking about, Stone. The finger-nail w/pick type. An in-between tone. It kinds of reminds me of some sort of a ZZ Top thing. v IP: Logged |
