hi,

so this is my first post:

im planning on buying a guitar soon and look forward to my new little hobby, but im faced with a dilemma--im left handed.

what are your thoughts on a righ-fretted guitar for left handers.. they are much harder to find but i want something that will be best suited for me.

now, ive spoken to my brother's gf, who is a lefty, and she says she uses a left-fretted guitar because her left hand is more dextrous and she can more easily move up and down the fret board. however, she is using an acoustic guitar and does more strumming. im going for an electric and will probably be focussing on more picking.

if i go with a right-fretted guitar will i have to reverse the way i read music?

what are uz guys' thoughts? im especially interested in any lefty's that HAVE gone with the left-fretted electric and their experiences.

thx in advance.

alex.

ps. i did do a search in the archive to see if this had been discussed before, but couldnt find any relavent posts.

Hey,

Yeah, left-handed guitars are really rare, and thus more expensive. You might just want to learn the right-handed way- it is possible, and I don't think you would be at a humongous disadvantage.

Or...I was in Guitar Center the other day peeking at electric acoustics, and came across this left-handed guy who just flipped a right-handed guitar upside down! Of course if you play it that way you have to invert all the chords and stuff, and I'm sure it's a whole bunch harder.

And there's the thought of stringing a right-handed guitar backwards. But I don't know whether or not that might damage a guitar- I guess it would depend on whether you had a straight or angled bridge.

Hope this helps,
Jess

Jimi Hendrix made do with a righty strung lefty and he seems to of done alright.

That aside I am left handed but play right handed. Dont think dextrosity (have i just made that word up) comes into it. Both hands have to work together wether they are fingerpicking, grabing chords or shredding. I went righty for the simple reason that I did not want to limit the potential guitars that I could play.
