Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Is a collection of solos taken from various live performance and studio settings and strung together via snippets of absurd dialog ala Sheik Yerbouti.

One listen to this album, and you'll either be convinced that Zappa was the most innovative player to ever strangle a G-string, or you'll share the opinion of a former roommate of mine who, after I had forced him to listen to the whole CD at a very loud volume, stated, "I would have a hard time calling most of that music."

Needless to say, Frank, while in the throes of improvisational frenzy, is an aquired taste.

Cetain selections within this package could only be described as physical abuse perpetrated upon hapless air molecules, while other pieces will have you swearing that you have touched the face of God.

If you have never been exposed to the art of improvisation-as-spontaneous composition, prepare yourself for an advanced musical education.

Picking up where Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar leaves off, Guitar contains an equal balance of Frank's 6-string extrapolations from the '81-'82 period and the '84 tour, with a couple of oldies thrown in for good measure.

Though the backup band seems much more subdued on this one, Frank's reckless abandon approach to a Floyd Rose fills the gaps.

Sadly, the '84 material presented here shows evidence of zappa's increasing time spent away from the guitar.

Taken as a whole, Shut up and Guitar are a fine testament to a master at work.
